Storage Version 4 Is Generally Available
Storage version 4 is now generally available. From PowerSync Service v1.27.0, it is also the default for all PowerSync Cloud instances and for self-hosted instances with MongoDB bucket storage.
We released version 4 as a beta in v1.26.0. Since then, we've tested it on a wide range of instances and released more fixes and improvements in v1.26.1 and v1.27.0. It's now ready for general use.
As a reminder, version 4 gives you faster sync and reprocessing, S3 object storage, and incremental reprocessing for Sync Streams on MongoDB source databases. Read the beta announcement to learn more about each feature.
What happens on your next deployment
Your instance moves to version 4 on its next Sync Config deployment on v1.27.0 or later. Until then, it keeps its current storage version.
That deployment runs like any deployment: PowerSync reprocesses your data in the background while the current version keeps serving clients. There is no downtime. Clients then download their data again once.
Incremental reprocessing
If your source database is MongoDB and you use Sync Streams, deployments after the switch use incremental reprocessing. They reprocess only the streams you added or changed, and clients download only the data for those streams.
Who is not affected
Sync Configs already on version 4, including those upgraded or opted in during the beta.
Sync Configs that set
storage_versionexplicitly. These keep that version.Self-hosted instances with Postgres bucket storage. Version 4 does not support Postgres bucket storage, so these instances stay on version 2.
Staying on version 2
To keep a Sync Config on version 2, set storage_version: 2 in its config block before your next deployment:
config:
storage_version: 2Remove the setting when you are ready to move to version 4.
Limitations
Incremental reprocessing requires a MongoDB source database and Sync Streams. Support for Postgres and other source databases is planned.
Sync Rules do not support incremental reprocessing. If you still use Sync Rules, see the migration guide.
S3 object storage is not on by default. On PowerSync Cloud, we enable it per instance on request, and plan to enable it on all instances automatically later. Contact us if you want it on your instance sooner.
On self-hosted instances, you configure S3 object storage yourself. See the self-hosted S3 setup docs.
See the storage version 4 docs for further details. If you notice any issues after a deployment, let us know on Discord.
